PHILADELPHIA (July 8, 2026) – Following is a statement from Philadelphia Federation of Teachers (PFT Local 3) President Arthur G. Steinberg:
“On June 10th, Superintendent Dr. Tony Watlington, Sr., announced that 340 classroom positions were being restored thanks to a budget agreement reached by Council President Kenyatta Johnson and Mayor Cherelle Parker. We applauded that announcement then, on behalf of our members and the affected school communities we serve.
“But nearly one month later, our members still have not received confirmation from the District that their positions are secure. A Zoom meeting held by the District yesterday, which had already been rescheduled twice, was a day-long debacle that left many PFT members frustrated and disenchanted. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking for other members who have received offers from surrounding districts, wish to remain in Philly public education, but don’t have confirmation yet of the school in which they will be working.
“Take into account the chaos and turmoil this poorly organized process has created in a highly competitive market where people work in crumbling buildings, and it is no surprise that the School District has trouble retaining employees. Those responsible for this mess must be held accountable, just as our members would be.
“It is imperative that the District make correcting these administrative issues a priority. The first school bell of the summer must be an occasion for joy and optimism – not confusion and exasperation.”
