After years of declining state funding, waste and corruption, the Scranton School District has been made a "recovery district" by the state. With a recovery plan due in May, there's talk of closing schools in the financially struggling, impoverished district. But members of the Scranton Federation of Teachers have joined with community leaders to demand adequate and fair funding. Read more and sign a petition here.

PITTSBURGH - Educators at Environmental Charter School here have in December for union representation in an official ballot conducted by the National Labor Relations Board.

A clear majority of ECS teachers and other professionals elected to unionize after signing a petition last month stating their desire to join the American Federation of Teachers. Voter turnout was 100 percent.

Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers members voted overwhelmingly to ratify the three collective bargaining agreements with the Pittsburgh School District. The new agreements will expire on June 30, 2020.

The professional unit contract was accepted by 90% of voting members, the paraprofessional unit contract was accepted by 77% of voting members, and the technical-clerical unit contract was accepted by 90% of voting members. The PFT represents 2,400 teachers, 565 paraprofessionals and 20 technical-clerical employees.

In a major victory for Temple University Graduate Student Association, Local  6290 ratified its fifth contract, which includes raises of 2.7% in each of the four years of the contract, plus university-paid healthcare benefits.

The Federation of Pottstown Teachers today launched a new program at Back to School Night that will put new, high-quality books into the hands of every student in the district. FPT, the union representing 250 teachers in Pottstown public schools, has partnered with the First Book organization to provide 16,000 high-quality books that students can take home and keep.
