PFT President Jerry Jordan on Change in CDC Guidance on Social Distancing for Elementary Students

"This union has always followed the science in our recommendations and requirements around COVID mitigation. That was true yesterday and remains true today. We look forward to reviewing the studies that led to the change in the CDC guidance regarding social distancing regulations.

"One of the most significant factors regarding mitigation has been social distancing. So of course, any change in those requirements concerns us. However, as science is ever-evolving and information about this virus is ever-evolving, we will continue to adapt and adjust as warranted.

"We share the concerns that our members have regarding changing protocol and guidance. In an already confusing and scary time, changes in requirements add another layer of stress and uncertainty. Like our members, we want school buildings to reopen when they are safe to do so. It's exactly why we have worked so hard to negotiate an MOA that allows for just that.

"Our MOA is based on agreed upon mitigation strategies, including social distancing protocol. Fortunately, we have a clause in our MOA that requires the School District to discuss the implementation of any changes in guidance.

"Keeping our members and the students we serve safe is our top priority. Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, we have worked relentlessly to implement one of the strongest safety plans in the nation. This plan includes stringent ventilation requirements and other critical metrics. That work continues today, and it will continue tomorrow."
