The School District of Philadelphia made a commitment to complete all asbestos remediation at Hopkinson Elementary before reopening the building.
PHILADELPHIA- “The School District of Philadelphia has informed the Federation that they have agreed to our recommendation that urgent asbestos remediation be completed before the school is cleared for reoccupancy. This is an absolutely commendable decision and one borne out of the relentless advocacy of the PFT and all of our members.
“Our recommendations are always given based on facts, science, and our deep commitment to protecting the health and safety of our members and the students we serve.
“The urgency of the facilities crisis in our schools cannot be overstated. Just this week, I joined AFT President Randi Weingarten, Laborers District Council Business Manager Ryan Boyer, and dozens of teachers and parents at Hopkinson to highlight the crisis as well as offer real solutions.
“Every day, our union is fighting for and advocating for the safety of every person working and learning in our schools day in and day out.
“Further, the District’s response to our proposed rapid response team is very encouraging, and I appreciate Jim Creedon’s leadership in convening this group and looking for creative solutions to this problem. This week we had a productive meeting with District officials as well as labor partners to further develop this plan.
“I will never stop fighting for my members and the children we serve. The District’s decision on Hopkinson is an enormous win for the children and staff at Hopkinson, and we remain devoted to ensuring the safety of every educator and student in Philadelphia.”
