PHILADELPHIA—“On behalf of the members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, I applaud and celebrate Mayor Kenney’s signing of the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights. The PFT believes that every worker should be able to expect to be respected, protected and treated fairly by their employer.
“This new law gives nannies, home care workers, and housekeepers unprecedented rights. For the first time, domestic workers are guaranteed rights that include 30-minute meal breaks (after five hours of work) and 10-minute rest breaks (after four hours of work); written contracts for all domestic workers; and portable paid time off. These are the kinds of working conditions that will provide workers who are parents the job security and flexibility needed to be even more involved in their children’s education.
“The PFT thanks Councilmember Maria Quiñones-Sánchez for introducing and championing this bill. The provisions in the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights will make Philadelphia a model for cities who want to present themselves as places where all workers are treated with dignity and respect.”
