On March 12, PFT president Jerry Jordan, AFT president Randi Weingarten, and U.S. Representative Bob Brady joined others to call for citizenship for Carmela Hernandez and her family. Carmela and her four children came to the U.S. to escape violent drug gangs in Mexico. The family has been given sanctuary at the Church of the Advocate in North Philadelphia.

Carmela Apolonio Hernandez fled the violence of her native Mexico with her four school-aged children only to be confined to a church in Philadelphia to avoid being deported back there. "I feel like a bird stuck in a cage because I can't fly, I can't do anything," said Apolonio Hernandez, 36, through an interpreter, Kate Barut, as they stood beside pews inside the nave of the Church of the Advocate.
